Take advantage of our central location to visit western Sicily

BETWEEN TRAPANI AND ERICE

VersoMare Villa is located in Valderice, a small village located on the hills between Trapani and Erice, overlooking the sea, the gulf of Erice and Monte Cofano. It is in an ideal position as a starting point to visit all of western Sicily: the Reserve of Salt Pans, the Baroque Churches in the historic centre of Erice, the coves of the Zingaro Reserve, the beach of San Vito lo Capo, the historic centre of Trapani.

The main places near our villa are Trapani and Erice, whose historic centres are about 15 minutes away. Trapani, known for its sickle-shape, has a millennia-old history that makes it one of the oldest cities in all of Italy. It "welcomes" and hosts since its foundation, historically open to the different cultures and populations that have always left their mark (in the urban fabric, culture, traditions, language). Erice, between myth and history, is one of the most beautiful and suggestive villages in all of Italy. It looks like a small jewel nestled on the summit of Monte San Giuliano, where myths, legends, historically important events, suggestive views, and monuments of great value coexist. Erice and Trapani are just two of the main attractions that can be reached in a few minutes by staying at our villa with a garden.

Tour of Trapani Centre

A walk in the historic centre of Trapani, along the main streets or among the secondary alleys, is certainly one of the experiences to recommend to discover the many treasures that enrich the "old" city such as the suggestive walls on the sea, the baroque noble palaces, the liberty buildings and the very ancient churches with glistening domes.

We suggest a walk that enriches and relaxes, between panoramic corners on the sea and the narrow alleys of the historic neighborhoods. It is the ideal solution, even with family and young children, to visit the city and appreciate its monuments and historic palaces.

Some suggestions, a minimal part of the small and great treasures of the historic centre of Trapani, are: Palazzo delle Poste Centrali and Palazzo D'Alì; Via Garibaldi, the historic "Rua Nova"; Piazza Ex Mercato del Pesce; Senatorial Palace; Porta Oscura and Torre dell'Orologio; Church of the Collegio dei Gesuiti; Cathedral of San Lorenzo; Walls of Tramontana and Porta Botteghelle; Church of San Francesco d'Assisi; Church of San Pietro and Monumental Organ.

The Salt Route, between salt pans and windmills

Among windmills, mounds of salt, and hundreds of bird species including the characteristic pink flamingos, you can enjoy an itinerary starting from Trapani, along the west coast of western Sicily where you will discover ancient crafts, extraordinary habitats, sustainable formulas of coexistence between man and nature.

The first stop on the salt route is certainly the Salt Museum of Nubia, inside the "Saline Culcasi". It is a 300-year-old salt house where the stages of salt processing are illustrated, and some tools used for extraction and collection are preserved. The explanatory panels on the walls and the photos of the salt workers at work help immerse the visitor in the world of salt pans and bring them closer to a profession with its own rhythms and rituals that were passed down from father to son. The visit is completed by a walk along the embankments of the salt pans, to the coast and the suggestive tower of Nubia.

A panorama to be enjoyed also at sunset, when everything turns red and the basins turn into mirrors, offering unique color contrasts in the world. An experience absolutely to be done, also thanks to the very short distance from our hotel.

A trip to Erice

Erice was the ancient religious capital of the mythical people of the Elimi, known to be the sacred mountain thanks to the presence of the temple dedicated to Venus. Erice will amaze you with the beauty of its palaces and churches, the charm of its streets and ancient walls, the typical sweets, and handicrafts, such as carpets and ceramics. You can already enjoy wonderful views from the cable car reaching the summit.

Erice can also be reached from Trapani via cable car, whose station is about 10 minutes from our hotel, reachable by car/taxi or public transport.

Towards San Vito lo Capo and the Zingaro

The main attractions of San Vito lo Capo are its beautiful beaches and coves. First of all, the main beach of the town, characterized by crystal-clear sea and fine sand dotted with fragments of red coral. The entire coast of Baia Santa Margherita on the west of the town is characterized by small pebble coves, a large beach, Cala Rossa, Cala Mancina, the rock of Isulidda and the small beach of Macari. Breathtaking transparency and unspoiled nature make this stretch of coast a little earthly paradise.

Finally, the Zingaro Nature Reserve can be reached by passing through the Tonnara del Secco. The first nature reserve established in Sicily is a magical place, a sort of living naturalistic museum of the peculiarities of the north-western Sicilian coast, where steep promontories rich in Mediterranean scrub rise against a turquoise blue sea, teeming with life.

Favignana and the Egadi Islands

About 7 km off the coast, between Trapani and Marsala, the Egadi Islands archipelago, home to the largest marine protected area in Europe, is a natural paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The main islands, Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo, attract many tourists who want to enjoy the sea and breathtaking landscapes.

There are really many places to visit in the Egadi Islands such as the Florio establishment, the hypogeal gardens, the beautiful and famous beaches of Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, and Lido Burrone in Favignana; the Genovese cave, the stacks, Capo Grosso, and the beaches of Cala Minnola and Cala Fridda in Levanzo; the castle of Punta Troia, the Roman houses, the lighthouse of Punta Libeccio and all the wonderful caves along the coast of Marettimo.

Guests of our villa in Valderice can easily and functionally reach and visit the Egadi Islands, sailing from the port of Trapani, choosing between:

  • A daily boat trip to Levanzo and Favignana to enjoy diving and sunbathing
  • A one-day bike tour of Favignana
  • A day of trekking and snorkeling on the island of Levanzo
  • The tour of the island of Marettimo with a visit to the marine caves
